William Preston Phelps, 1848-1923, American, "Cattle Crossing". William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Exceedingly rare engravings of cockatoo and parrots by Johann Leonhard Frisch, German, eighteenth century. The hand coloring on these copper plate engravings is original. Each is on rag paper 8.5" wide by 13.5".
The cockatoo plate, which is the most sought after, has a significant paper repair which has been re-done using archival materials. It is thus priced the same, rather than more, than the others, which are in very good condition. Priced individually.
Superbly hand-colored lithographs of exotic animals by Joseph Brodtman, published in Zurich by Heinrich Schinz in 1827 (Naturhistorische Abildungen der Saegethiere".) Each sheet is 9.5" x 13". All in very good condition.
Very fine lithographs of sheep from Professor Low's classic "Illustrations of the Breeds of the Domestic Animals", published in London 1841. These are expertly done with fine shading and subtle coloring and are one of the earliest examples of outstanding lithography. Each sheet is 12.5" x 17".

A finely executed watercolor on organic wafer bust-length depiction of an attractive sitter wearing a white gown, pearl earrings, and pearl brooch. Accompanied by an old typed and written note identifying the sitter and providing other information: "This beautiful miniature of my Grandmother, / Eliza Bowen Cadwalder, was given to me by my mother, who / treasured it. My Grandfather was George Cadwalder, / California pioneer who was an original Forty-niner and / mined gold in California...
"Poeonia peregrine flore" is another rarely found and much sought after engraving from Besler's early botanical volume. 16.5" x 20" on rag paper; hand colored. This example is from the 1640 edition, with no text on the verso. Edges reinforced with framer's tape on reverse causing minor bunching at the perimeter, otherwise fine. This has been taken into account in the pricing.
Perhaps the second most spectacular of the tulip engravings in Basilius Besler's unsurpassed early volume of botanical engravings published early 1600's. This specimen is from the 1640 folio, and thus has no text on the verso. "Tulipa Serotina" rarely comes on the market. On rag paper 16.5" x 20"; hand colored, in outstanding condition with no visible flaws.
