A whimsical drawing of a young child-like chimpanzee seated in a parlor, evidently enjoying a cocktail, a tea kettle in the foreground suggesting that he is about to partake in other civilized human behavior. The drawing is unsigned. I researched a bit on the net to see if it might be by the artists who created Curious George, (Hans-Augusto Rey(Reyersbach) and Margret Rey), but the obvious lack of resemblance to that most famous cartoon ape indicates that this drawing is not of him...

Contrasty, dramatic charcoal drawing of a figure who appears to be civil rights icon Martin Luther King, 23 1/2" by 17 3/4" inside the mat, 31" by 25" simply framed in wood behind thin Plexi, signed at lower left and dated there 1987 by American artist JESSICA ROCKWELL. The artist lived at one time in Southern California and that is likely why this rather early work was found here...

Antique drawing in charcoal on paper of four women who appear to be in surf or sand at water's edge, apparently unsigned, probably European and 19th century. The figures are somewhat heroic, as if survivors. Possibly a preparatory study for a painting, this work's authorship is unknown, but obviously the artist was talented and probably even listed and known. The sheet, 8 1/4" by 14", is seemingly glued to an illustration board backing...

This is a fine old drawing of an old-style wooden house with porch, an ancient old tree arching over the structure and two tiny figures at left. The drawing on paper, laid on a board, measures 14" by 9 1/2" inside the mat and 19" by 14 1/2" as framed. There does not appear to be a signature anywhere, but considering the quality of the imagery we must conclude that the artist was trained and listed. Found in Riverside, California, with Santa Barbara framer's sticker on the backing...

Signed charcoal drawing of a nude female seen in profile, arms over her head, an unreadable signature at lower right. The work measures 12" by 8 3/4" inside the mat and 20" by 16" simply framed. I opened the backing and other than a few numbers in pencil there is no other information. At some point there was a little moisture exposure at the bottom...

This is a work by the German artist MAX MAYRSHOFER (1875-1950), likely created around the time of World War I. This is a very early work, circa 1962-1964, by the listed gallery artist RICHARD SEGALMAN (1934-), the subject an old woman, seated, attending to some knitting. The piece is on thin paper, measuring 11" by 7 3/4" inside the mat and 20 1/2" by 15 1/2" in the original framing, which bears on the reverse the pre-zip code (early 1960's) label of Kaymar Gallery on West Broadway in New York City...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal on paper, 13 3/4" by 16 1/2" as inexpensively framed without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Considering the subject matter of this drawing, I would think it li...

This one is hard to describe....but I will start somewhere. It is an oil on canvas work, unframed, 24" by 24", with no signature on the front, and only "SARAH W." on the overlap giving any possible indication as to who painted this. A green eye within a triangular window in to a human face stares at the viewer, Magritte-like, as the face of a young black child stares from the lower right corner, as a complex pair of intertwined figures at lower left make for arresting and dream-like imagery. ...

11" x 8" approximate size. Allegorial sketch chracoal on paper Note edges with crimps on border of the work can be easily be cropped out with mat. This is an original charcoal on paper portrait drawing of a young woman, 18" by 12 1/2" inside the mat (25" by 19" as framed), signed "J Floch" at lower right. His prints and drawings (see a lithograph by the artist, in my shop) are quite affordable, while paintings have brought to the $80,000 area at auction in Europe and America. Floch was born in Austria, but spent the later part of his life in the New York area. From an online biography: "Joseph Floch was born in Vienna, Austria in 1895. He ...

A vintage (mid 20th century) fine charcoal on paper drawing of a young New Mexico woman in traditional shawl, her expressive face beautifully drawn by a trained hand, the work signed at lower right "E. Gonzales". Oddly, I cannot tie this to a listed artist by that name, but the talent is undeniable. Measurements are 22 1/4" by 18 1/2" (25" by 21" in attractive gold framing). The work is in the style of famous artist and influential teacher Nicolai Fechin---perhaps "E. Gonzales" was a student ...

This is a beautifully executed work in charcoal, 18" by 15" (19" by 16" as framed), the subject a young girl, staring out at the viewer, likely wearing her school uniform, circa 1930's or 1940's, I am thinking. Unfortunately there is no signature. When I first saw this I thought it possible it might be by a Taos and Santa Fe master.......and I held on to it for many years, thinking I could run into another work that would unlock the mystery. That work has not come by, so, I will offer her for...
