American (likely California) oil on canvas painting, 5" by 4" (8 3/4" by 7 5/8" in stained oak period frame), signed at upper right corner with initials "M.W." and dated there '87 (or, possibly, '97). Stamped on the stretcher is "Fred Rhoda/Fruitvale, Cal", and written in pencil in an old hand is " Whitney"; we can probably assume therefore that the artist is one M. Whitney...

A striking mid-century painting from Mexico, glowing with color, by the hand of listed artist JORGE EDGARDO RAMIREZ (sometimes followed by MARTINEZ), born 1940. The oil on canvas, 16 1/4" by 31 1/2" in thin strip framing, is signed at lower right and is signed again, titled and dated on the reverse. The orange, brown and tan earth colors cement its mid-century heritage. The work glows from within, possessing an almost fluorescent quality...

An oil on canvas, 12" by 16" and 16 1/2" by 20" in dark stained wood frame, featuring a number of women in a colorful tropical village, carrying baskets of tropical fruits (possibly papayas). The artist signed at bottom right "Paul". The work probably dates to the 1970's or 1980's. A colorful addition to any room. Very slight wear on frame and tiny white area in sky is a spot of disturbed paint.

Unframed oil on paper on board painting of a desert Southwest landscape, 8 1/2" by 12", signed at lower right M. Edwards. The painting probably dates to the 1920's or 1930's I would guess. It has accumulated a lot of soiling and varnish has yellowed, so it desperately needs a cleaning. Note the left extreme edge, which must have been behind a frame, to get some idea of the potential after cleaning. There is also a small dig at right edge, and upper right corner of the paper is missing...

Romanello". This is a twentieth century work, perhaps from the 1950's, or, possibly, earlier. I do not see a listing for the name...

A wonderful oil painting on canvasboard in naive/primitive style, 12" by 16" and featuring happy children sledding down a hill in Central Park in New York City one cold winter afternoon near dusk. The work is titled at lower right "Central Park" and is signed at lower left by artist MARY RUBY ORKIN (1894-1987). On the reverse is written "Copyrighted 1958 by Mark Orkin/Central Park West NYC 10023/#7 Sledding Hill at Sunset behind the Met"...

This being a common Chinese name, it is difficult to tie this work to a particular artist, and there are no apparent auction records under this name. Nevertheless we see a competently created work, in a difficult to master medium; consider the complex fleshing-out of the tower's detail...

Oil on board painting of a Mediterranean-looking coastline, 6 1/2" by 10 1/4" (11 3/4" by 16" framed), unsigned, the luminous sunshine handled with considerable skill. This needs only a signature to propel it to stardom; it's really a shame that the artist did not affix his or her name. I suppose this could be Southern California but the buildings don't match up with any coastal locale that comes to mind. I believe the work could date to the 1920's or 1930's...

Circa 1900 American pastel landscape drawing, 22 1/2" by 9 3/4" (29" by 15" framed), apparently unsigned, in the style of William Chandler and the pastel school of the period. The work is framed behind non-glare glass, which blurs the detail. Condition appears to be excellent. The vertical format would fit your hard-to-fit narrow wall. See other American pastels of the late 19th century/early 20th century period in my shop.

The work appears to be of a coastal New England view, which leads me to believe that it would be by the hand of listed artist MARY GRANT JOHNSTON of Massachusetts and New York, but I have no other works with which to compare it...

An impressive oil on canvasboard landscape painting with great impasto and energy, signed at lower left corner by the well listed Lithuanian artist JADVYGA DOBKEVICIUTE PAUKSTIENE (1913-2005). Paukstiene's works are auctioned in Lithuania, where she is considered a major national artist. Born in Latvia, she was educated at the Kaunas School of Art in Lithuania, studying under Petras Kalpokas in 1938...

Oil on canvas unframed painting of two chairs and a glass-topped table on a peaceful terrace overlooking an extensive landscape, likely California, 16" by 20", unsigned. The artist is anonymous but his/her work is quite skilled and pleasing. The impressionistic handling of this scene makes for a most decorative and appealing painting. The regular size should make framing easy and inexpensive.

A fine unframed watercolor on heavy quality watercolor paper, the subject the famed mission bells at the 18th century Mission San Juan Capistrano in Southern California, titled on reverse label "El Campanario", 20 1/2" by 30", signed at lower right corner "R Folk NWS".
