This is an American painting from the first half of the 20th century, the subject gulls in flight. The unsigned oil on canvas measures 24" by 36", plus 2 1/2" of interesting Deco style weathered black painted wood frame on a side. I purchased this in Miami some years back, thinking the work bore considerable resemblance to the Florida-period works of JANE PETERSON (1876-1965), a major American artist who painted in South Florida for some time...

A pretty scene of rapids and a wild river running through a wide gorge, trees bordering, signed at lower left with initials that appear to be MKB and dated there 1934. The watercolor on paper work measures 14 1/2" by 11 1/2" (25 1/2" by 21 1/2" in interesting frame, with drawn lines mat). The landscape could be Canadian as well but without more information on the artist it is difficult to determine authorship. Found in the mountain states of the west...

Watercolor on paper, 10 1/4" by 14" inside the present mat, and 3 1/2" of frame and mat, signed at lower right "G. MORELL" (or, MORELLY or MORELLI), showing a Southwest Hopi style native American pot against a striped background. This is an original watercolor, and NOT A PRINT! I do not see a listing for this obviously talented artist, but this is a very decorative work that will grace any home or office seeking a Southwest theme. Condition is excellent with fresh colors and no damage.

One of two works by this artist in my shop is this watercolor on paper, measuring 8 1/4" by 13 5/8" inside the mat, 14" by 19" as framed, signed at lower right by the noted American nineteenth century artist GEORGE HERBERT MCCORD (1848-1909). This is a nicely painted work by an artist considered to be among the "second generation" of Hudson River School painters. McCord was from the New York and New Jersey area, but he painted in Europe, and for a time in the western United States...

(One of two works by the artist in my shop), a watercolor on paper, 9 3/8" by 13 1/4" (17" by 21" as framed), signed in English at lower left, titled on reverse with what looks like "Lake Wobegone" (and $100 original price) and dated "43", by noted, well listed Jewish American artist ELIAS NEWMAN (1903-1999). Newman was born in Poland but was in the US as a boy...

Watercolor on paper, 12 3/8" by 15 1/2" (16" by 19" as framed), signed in English and Hebrew at lower left, not dated but probably circa 1940's or 1950's, by noted, well Jewish American listed artist ELIAS NEWMAN (1903-1999). Newman was born in Poland but was in the US as a boy. In his late teens he met such artists as the Soyers, Peter Blume, and Chaim Gross at The Educational Alliance Art School in New York City...

**One of two very similar works by the artist in my shop, preferably to be kept together- Oil on canvas, 16 1/4" by 12 3/4", in an old master style but of mid to late 19th century date, teaturing a house, tree and dogs and travelers, signed at lower left by noted, auctioned artist PIERRE LOUIS JOSEPH DE CONINCK (1828-1910). This is an almost monochromatic, very understated, subtle painting; perhaps a study for a larger, highly finished work...

Oil on canvas painting of a young woman knitting on a grassy slope in a glade, 25" by 18", 32" by 25" framed, signed at lower right in red by a talented, though little-known, apparently Argentine painter who worked in the early years of the twentieth century, A. MORENO DE TORRES. This is a fine work by a very skilled hand. Were it by a better-known artist, the price would be multiples higher...

Watercolor on paper of herons or egrets in a marshy area, measuring 21 1/4" by 29 1/4" (54 cm. by 74 cm.), in a 1" wide modern era frame. The painting is firmly signed in ink at lower right and dated 1905. This is, judging from auction records I see, **one of the largest works by this noted Belgian impressionist artist**. Outer was born in the part of Luxembourg closest to Belgium. He studied art in Louvain and Brussels, and in the atelier of Jean-Francois Portaels...

Watercolor on paper, 22 1/4" by 15", unframed, signed at lower right in black ink "N. P. Brigante", the subject a forest glade with trees, boulders and grasses. The painting is by NICHOLAS P. BRIGANTE (1895-1989), a California painter often confused with the Italian painter of Venice scenes, Nicholas Briganti with an "i". Brigante was born in Italy, and was in Los Angeles as a child. According to the Hughes biography, he was a sign painter and studied under Hanson Puthuff...

“Venice” oil on canvas 20 x 24 Claudio Simonetti was born in Rome, January 29, 1929, into a family of artists. From his father he inherited his love for art and interest in colors. He began his studies at the Rome School of Art, and after these studies, he traveled extensively throughout Italy and France, where he painted from nature and learned from his associations with other artists...

Large (21 1/4" by 30 1/4" plus 3 1/2" mat and gold frame) highly detailed drawing of a royal Indian elephant festooned with festive "hat", bells and rug, seen in profile, and surrounded by a decorative floral border. This is classic Indian art executed in a traditional style, though I believe it is of fairly contemporary age. The silk is backed by rather cushy, soft material. Frame is in good condition with minor wear. The art itself has a few very small abrasion marks and losses due to dryi...

For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing. This likely dates to the 1860's to 1880's period. As such, it is not in perfect condition; but is certainly in good enough condition ...

This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame). The work is smoky and could benefit greatly from professional cleanin...

Watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" (and simple frame 1 3/8" wide), unsigned, the subject a hushed redwood forest obviously in Northern California, the sunlight dappling the forest floor, and a slight hint of man's intrusion in the form of a split wood fence or gate. The colors, handling, and subject matter suggest the hand of important early California watercolorist LORENZO P. LATIMER (1857-1941), but Latimer had many students who painted in his style, (including his son), so we cannot be a...

Oil on canvas painting of fruits in a shallow dish, 6" by 12" (10" by 16" nicely framed), signed at lower right by the well-known American artist ALEXANDER BROOK (1898-1980). The subdued colors and careful arrangement suggest familiarity with the great Italian still life master Giorgio Morandi. There is a coldness, a stillness, that is quite monumental. Brook was born in Brooklyn, and studied at the Art Students League from 1914-1918. He married painter Peggy Bacon, and was divorced from her...

Watercolor on heavy paper laid on board, 30" by 22", unframed, signed at upper left corner in ball point pen "Ernest W. Scanes, 3/25/66, Otsego Remnant". Scanes (1909-1994) is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustration of books and ads, he is known as an illustrator as well. I have previously owned a 1947 gouache, also of skiers, and am currently offering a charcoal drawing by him in my shop. Evidently, a relative of the artist resides or re...
