Chokwe ritual staff top, Angola. Wood with lovely, well handled chocolate brown patina, excellent condition. Height 9 5/8". This was probably cut off the top of a longer staff. Very finely carved scarification on the face. Ex. James Stephenson African Art, NYC.
Kambatta or Arussi headrest, Ethiopia. Wood with beautiful, rich, well handled patina. Height 7 7/8". Excellent condition, missing one small piece from when it was carved (probably a knot in the wood). Very fine overall engraving, and a particularly sensual sculptural form.

Massim snuff mortar. Wood, height 5 1/4". Dates to the nineteenth century. Incredibly well handled, worn and glossy patina. One crack near top edge, otherwise excellent condition. Ex. Greg Hamson, Los Angeles; ex. John and Marcia Friede, Rye, NY. Remains of overall abstract incising on the mortar, and the raised circular areas are flowers.
Massim snuff mortar. Wood, height 5 3/8". Excellent condition with a semi-glossy, well handled patina. Dates to the early twentieth century. Ex. Marc Assayag, Montreal; ex. John and Marcia Friede, Rye, NY. Beautiful, abstracted fish design finely engraved on this mortar.
