Infants Jesus and St. John the Baptist, a plaster of Paris / chalkware group, French, mid-19th century. The small Baptist with a cross and lamb is leaning towards Jesus who makes a gesture of benediction and is holding a scroll with the words “Agnus Dei” (God’s Lamb). Behind Jesus is a vine with grapes. The two little friends measure "5/ 12.5 cm in height and have a beautiful patina. Condition: fine.
A plaster of Paris sculpture of St. John the Baptist as a child, sleeping. The boy dressed in camel skin is leaning on a rock, cross in hand and a lamb at his feet. France, mid-19th century, with nice patina and traces of a light blue colouring. A pair of small Dogon shrine ladders. Wood, heights 8 3/8" and 8 3/4". Both show signs of extensive use. Some minor chips and cracks. The ladder to the right is totally intact, the ladder to the left may be fragmentary. These ladders were placed on a personal shrine commemorating a departed loved one, as devices to help their soul ascent to the spirit village. Both come mounted on custom bases.
