The master poster artist, Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942), created a marvelous poster for cigarette paper. The elephant's elevated trunk indicates happiness. The poster is linen mounted, measures 46" x 62," and is in very good condition with minor color restoration to the fold lines and paper restoration in the cape. This poster is now becoming hard to find and the prices continue to escalate.
On studying this print, I was challenged by what Maki meant. Did he not get it right when he gave us a black sun? It looks so dark and foreboding even on the sunny wall in our residence in Beijing.
If not a black sun, what color? The ranges are shown above. Or because the theme is a rather dark weapon, did he actually mean to do a dark image?
