An exceptional, large Neanderthal discoid scraper. Flint, in excellent condition. Height 4 3/8". Legal surface find from Grand-Pressigny, France. This particular lithic could be considered either a discoid scraper or an irregular partial biface axe. Continuous flaking around the edge, with a slight point at the distal end indicating that it may have been used as a cleaver as well. It also has an ingenious ergonomic structure imparting greater force when used as a striking tool...

2 Neolithic blades, one a retouched knife/sickle, and one a blade blank. Flint, heights 5 1/2" and 6 5/8". Both in excellent condition, legal surface finds. Larger blades such as these were struck from the large flint pebbles found in the Grand-Pressigny region, leaving behind the large sculptural cores known as the "livres du beurre" (butter loaves) (see my stock numbers 2784, 2160 and 2249 for examples)...

A large and unusual Neanderthal cleaver on a core from Fontmaure, France. Jasper, in excellent condition with a semi-glossy ground patina. Height 4 3/4". Legal surface find. This lithic is meticulously flaked over nearly its entire surface in such a way as to indicate that it was originally a flake core. It was later refined into a large cleaver, with a flat area removed at the proximal end, giving a solid ergonomic structure to the tool as a whole...

A group of three Neanderthal multi- tools, all worked from exterior flakes off jasper pebbles. Heights between 2 1/4" and 2 3/4". Legal surface finds from the Nordlinger Ries, Bavaria. Lovely deep ground patina, excellent condition. Interesting variety of scraper edges, burins, notches and blades on these tools, all very clear as the flaking process took place through the dense cortex of the pebble, exposing the lighter colored bean ore jasper on the interior...

Interesting example of a Neanderthal axe from Fontmaure, France. This is made of sandstone, and despite the fame of the beautiful jasper tools from the region, the majority of lithics in provenance from Fontmaure are made from this color of sandstone. Height 3 5/8", legal surface find, nice glossy ground patina. The truncation on the proximal end appears to be purposeful...
