Beautiful, large and hefty lower Paleolithic Clactonian chopper. Large areas of cortex remaining, and remarkable ergonomic design. Heidelberg Man. Flint, 4 3/4"x 3 1/2". This is a Neanderthal chopping tool on a core, flint, in excellent condition. Beautiful, glossy tumbled patina. Legal surface find which came out of an ancient, dried channel of the Creuse River near Lesigny-Vienne in France. 4"x 4". Solid and hefty lithic with a well-conceived ergonomic structure. Date to approx. 250,000-120,000 BCE.
Lower Paleolithic mode 2 biface axe. Flint, well patinated with calcium deposits and in excellent condition. Legal surface find from the village of Abilly, France. 5 3/8"x 2 1/2". The typology of this particular biface is difficult to pin down. Though it does bear resemblance to a Micoquien Fieron, it would in all probability generally be put into the category of a "core like biface", which is sort of a catch-all group for mode 2 tools which don't really fit any place else...
A mode 2 lower Paleolithic biface axe, Heidelberg Man. Flint, in excellent condition, with an amazing, glasslike ground patina. Legal surface find from Grand-Pressigny, France. 4 7/8"x 3 1/4". There is one ancient chip missing, the gap totally patinated, and as this is on the distal end it is indicative of having occurred early on during use. Dates to approx. 650,000 BCE.
Beautifully sculptural Neanderthal core, which bears traces of having been used as a chopping or crushing tool. Flint, in excellent condition with a glossy ground patina. Grand-Pressigny region, France, legal surface find. 4 1/2"x 3 1/2". Dates to 80,000-50,000 BCE.
Mode I lower Paleolithic pebble chopper on a flint nodule. Excellent condition with semi-glossy ground patina, 3 1/2"x 2 3/4". Ex. collection Hermann Mayer, Germany. A lovely Clactonian pebble chopper. These are rare tools, and in my experience, this particular typology is more indicative of Homo Erectus than Homo Heidelbergensis. Lovely caramel colored flint from the Grand-Pressigny region in France. Dates to approx. 650,000 BCE.
