3 larger, eccentric Neanderthal multi-tools from Fontmaure, France. Jasper, heights between 2 1/2" and 4". From an old Dutch collection purchased at auction. Three stunning tools, each with a variety of worked edges and multiple functioning tools. All with a beautiful patina and in excellent condition with no modern damage. Fine examples both of Neanderthal tool making and the gorgeous jasper from Fontmaure. All date to approximately 80,000-50,000 BCE.

5 Neanderthal tools on flakes. These came from the Wady el Amud caves, Tabgha, Galilee, from a 1926 archaeological expedition. Chert, heights between 2 3/8" and 3 1/4". All in excellent condition. Interesting variety of scrapers/blades and a burin (second from right). From the collection of John and Marcia Friede, well known for their spectacular collection of Oceanic Art (see: Jolika Collection, DeYoung Museum).

5 Danish Mesolithic blades from the Ertebolle-Ellerbek ("Kitchen Midden") culture. Legal surface finds. Flint, heights between 2 3/8" and 3 3/8". All in excellent condition, one with truncation, indicating it may have been an inset sickle blade with a wooden handle. Nice variety of blade edges, expertly retouched by the tool maker. Very beautiful, variegated and multi-colored flint. Date to 5300-3900 BCE

4 Neanderthal multi-tools on flakes, Fontmaure, France. Jasper, heights between 1 7/8" and 2 1/4". All are legal surface finds. Flake tools are tools made on flakes struck off a pebble and then further refined into the desired tool. In the case of these 4 tools a number of various working edges were made on each tool. Neanderthal partial biface multi-tool, flint, height 5 1/4". Excellent condition with fine, variegated patina. Large and very boldly constructed tool, with a prominent burin. This is a bit difficult to classify, but was obviously a multi-tool with a wide variety of functions. Given its size and weight I would imagine it was used to score and crack open large bones to extract bone marrow, an important source of iron at the time. Dates to 80,000-50,000 BCE...
