A group of three Neanderthal burins, all with scraper edges, from Marbach, Germany. Chert, legal surface finds, heights between 2 1/8" and 3". Excellent condition with matte ground patina. The two lithics pictured to the left and center have offset burins with accompanying convergent scraper edges. The lithic to the right has an unusual, semi-corkscrew twist to the scraper. Date to 80,000-50,000 BCE.

While not specifically categorized in current typology, this form of irregular chopper or burin is seen repeatedly in the output of Neanderthal from Fontmaure. Generally they consists of a burin or borer point offset to either side of the distal end, with a scraper edge on one or both sides of the burin...
