Recycled Neanderthal axe from the Grand-Pressigny region, France. Flint, height 3 1/4". Legal surface find with fine, glossy ground patina. Very finely wrought axe. At some point the distal end was broken off, and the axe was recycled- the end was retouched to form a concave scraper or push plane. The entire edge of the axe has been worked, and there is a deep notch just below the distal end, exhibiting some use damage. Dates to 80,000-50,000 BCE.

2 eccentric Neanderthal scrapers. Jasper, height: both at 3". From Fontmaure, France, purchased from an older Dutch collection. The lithic on the left has what may be a chip missing at the top left in the photo. This is an old chip, well patinated. By it's form I do not think it was intentional to the piece and may be use-damage. The right side shows signs of use and was summarily knapped, hence it may have been made "in the field" for some specific function...
