Round decorative tile of an early steamship atop a Sherwin-Williams-type schematic earth, diameter 7 3/8" and about 7/8" thick at the edges. This is a hand crafted and no doubt unique piece; hand painted, and glazed. On the reverse is scratched into the ceramic what I take to be apparently the date: "11-7-22". There are two holes drilled at the top, through which a wire has been strung, to allow this to hang on a wall. See several thousand paintings, drawings and prints in my shop.

The artist has used gold paint, among the other colors, making for an especially attractive, detailed, and large thangka. These paintings, also known as "tanka" or "thanka", are an art form going back to the 11th century or possibly before, in Buddhist areas around Tibet and Nepal...

Asian art is not my specialty, but I believe I know enough to call this a Tibetan "thangka". Thangka's (or, tangka's, as it is also spelled), are of Nepalese origin, subsequently exported over the Himalayas to Tibet. They are works of art made to be a pictorial record of a contemplative experience or interpretation of an historical event, such as the life of Buddha...
