Kokeshi, folk toy of NE Japan. Wood, height 12". Yamagata-kei classification of Yamagata Prefecture. Made by Kobayashi Koutaro of Yamagata City, born March 13, 1936. This kokeshi probably dates from the late 1970's. The very thin body of this kokeshi is an unusual and interesting characteristic.

This is a very colorful Japanese Plique-a-Jour cloisonne vase. The colors used are a little different than most and contrast beautifully.(See images) Condition is very good. But when held up to bright light a line can be seen. It does not show in normal lighting. The vase is even a little different size. It stands 3 5/8 inches tall.
An exquisite vase covered in rivulets of blue, yellow and green on a slightly flattened bottle form by Kiyomizu Rokubei VI enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The turned form has been slightly flattened creating four rounded sides, the resulting shape reminiscent of traditional Edo period green-glass bottles. This is a fabulous woven silk fukusa designed with Japanese tastes in mind. It is woven in silk with the addition of gold lacquered silk threads. Each of the four corners has four turtle tassels. The reverse side is red with a gold paulownia mon also woven with god threads. This is a very striking piece and makes a superb interior design statement. In excellent condition, it measures 24.5” square. We date this to mid-Showa.

Yoruba figurative sculptures for shrines dedicated to various deities often depict female devotees accompanied by children and holding bowls for kola nuts or other offerings. The Lid can be taken off to hold spices, herbs, food, nuts and other offerings to the fertility gods.
