Rare Japanese wood and lacquer totai cloisonne document box The carved lacquered tree bark (totai) includes two knots. The cloisonne flowers and butterfly on the top of this unusual box were achieved by using gold tone metal wires which were filled with colored lacquer and then hand polished. In excellent antique condition, it measures 13.25 inches long, 4.75" high, 2.25" high. Photos do not due justice to this large box, you will not be disappointed. Circa 1920's

Votive seated stone monkey sculpture with spread legs in the 'gassho' praying pose with folded hands for the safe childbirth based on the unique local folk belief seen around east central Saitama prefecture, Japan. Metal 'Shinmon' (Shrine crest) attached on well-used wooden board, which is called 'Hidari Mitsudomoe' (Left threefold tomoe) as a type of traditional 'Tomoe-mon' (Comma-like swirl crest) widely used in Shinto shrines and as a family emblem. Probably originally used for the dedication or as a part of building material of shrine. Early Showa period, early 20th century, Japan.
