Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who personanallu acquired it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it. There is some pigment loss and a crack in the mud on the side noted in enlargements. H: 22cm/18.5in and W;16.5/6.5

This is a typical necklace of the Dani Tribes of West Papua. The large shell fragments have been masterfully shaped from large bauler shells, cowery shells, and bark twine. Dani Tribe, West Papua Although the Irian Jaya or West Papua region of Indonesia is home to around 312 different tribes, the Dani are probably the most well-known thanks to the small numbers of foreigners that visit their Baliem Valley home.

An excellent carver's stool from the April River area of Papua New Guinea, early 1900's. It is 14-1/2” long and is nicely carved on all sides. A well-detailed fox head surrounded by geometric designs decorates one side, while a typical tribal symbol covers the other. The seat itself is surrounded by a serpent design. Lovely patina.

A Solomon Islands carved wood crescent shaped Samoan club. Appears (from our familiarity with Chinese furniture) to be ironwood. The incised decoration is partially filled with remaining encrustation. Good condition with minor surface wear (judging from which, a good patina has accumulated on this quite hard wood.) The flattened end of the grip, however, might possibly have at some point extended a bit longer (though there is patina to that surface as well.) Length, 25 1/8 inches (63.8 cm)
