A mask carved from dense wood with traces of painted decorations covered with a dark patina. It probably stems from Arunachal Pradesh region. Judging the ears and wide nose it looks like a feline predator but it could well be something else instead. There's an old crack in the chin and a small chip on the nose. A mask carved from a mushroom, Eastern part of Nepal, Raj people. This type of masks hang in the houses to ward of evil and danger. They are called "fog-eaters" as they are credited with the power to keep fog away from the mountains; fog being a danger when one had to go out and travel. The use of this mask fits in a shamanistic type of belief that is still quite strong among the Raj. Dim.: WxDxH 28x14x22cm. In good condition with a smokey patina.

A large set of porcelain shrine guardians in the form of Inari on pedestals decorated with over-glaze enamels and gold. Inari, the magical fox holds one paw over a burning jewel, and each clutches a precious object in its mouth. They are roughly 3-1/4 x 6 x 12 inches (30 x 16 x 8.5 cm). There is a repair to the ears on one, from which extends a hairline crack. This does not affect the integrity of the piece.
