Turn-of-the-century sterling silver bowl. Made by Whiting in New York. Narrow and oval with swan-form ends: head and neck flowing into splayed and engraved wings. Underside has chased Japonesque cattails with turned-down and overlapping tendrils. Gilt-washed interior. Short round foot mounted to 4 pierced and scrolled brackets on curvilinear quatrefoil foot. Fully marked including maker’s stamp and no. 350A. Excellent condition.

Beautiful German sterling silver swan bowl with rare glass liner. A nice-sized bird with twisting s-scroll neck, closed bill, and direct expression. Gently protuberant haunches and webbed feet in glide mode. Fine delineation of feathers from scaly neck to downy wing plumes. Liner is frosted with scalloped rim. Both have whiplash-scrolled rim and applied figures—an eclectic frieze that includes dog-petting hobos, stickball playing boys, tool-bearing workmen, and pipe-smoking grannies.
