Wonderful detailed Miniature Portait of a Lady of the Court with fine gown and jewels. It is in original red velvet frame which measures 4.5" tall. Portrait is appx 3.25" tall. Painted on Ivory wafer and signed by artist, this is European in Origin. I just love the fine detail in her garb and elaborate jewelry. Condition is Very Good. You will be pleased, it is hard to let go of this one.

A fantastic Clarissa Peters (Mrs. Mose B. Russell) mourning painting of a baby and toddler. Hanging scroll. Shoki holds Futen’s wind bag which balloons around him and protects him from a very light rain. While Shoki has his hands full trying to control the wind bag, his bulging eyes are rolled in defeat and annoyance towards the right, where a little demon who has a Chinese mortar on his head and holds the pestle in its hand jumps in front of him.

The Byōbu "wind wall" are Japanese screens made up of 4 to 6 panels (the latter being the most common). They serve as partitions or decor for dances in the ceremonial context. They are usually adorned with seasonal flora and fauna, painted in gouache on a gold leaf background.
The large gold "solids" highlight the quiet strength of decorative elements such as cypresses (Paine 1981) which seem to emerge from the mist invoking a symbolism. The convention of these "floating clouds" is even older ...
