Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Buddhist Porcelain Bowl (Wheels of Law)
This porcelain bowl was made during the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. It is of the type known as "Swatow" or "Zhangzhou" ware, made in Fujian province, often for export around South-east Asia. The underglaze blue decoration comprises semi-circles and the auspicious Buddhist Wheel of Law. It is coated in a thick crackled glaze, save for the foot that has fired to a pale pinkish brown.

This unusual blue & white porcelain bowl was made during the mid to late 16th century c.1560-1580. The outer surface remains undecorated whereas the inner surface is particularly elaborately decorated. In the centre is a standing bird, most likely a crane (a symbol of longevity), together with various plants and blossoms. A very thinly potted small blue and white Ming dynasty saucer. It is so thinly potted that if held against the light, we can see through it. The centre of the saucer has a flower that looks like a lotus pod in a double circle. The porcelain is slightly grayish in colour. It has the Cheng Hua (1465-1487) six character mark and of the period.

A massive bronze (copper tin alloy) vase cast in Han dynasty Hu shape and with Han style Taotie mask handles. The archaistic style decoration is an amalgam of Shang and Zhou dynasty motifs. These consist of upper and lower bands depicting stylized dragons and a central band of large Taotie ("monster"} masks. All are reserved against a flattened Leiwen (cloud) daiper ground.
