Sho-Kannon Bosatsu seated on a lotus-form dais. Yosegi-zukuri joined wood-block construction, finished in lacquer and gilt, the ornamental head-piece in gilt-copper and the eyes of inset rock-crystal. Early-Edo Period ca. 1675. Excellent condition, with only minor old loss to the head-piece and loss of the rock-crystal originally inset in the urna, with desirable patination overall.

Very good condition overall, with only minor old wood loss and inter-block cracking as well as desirable rubbing and patination to the lacquer-and-gilt finish.

DESCRIPTION: A classic and quite old pair of hand carved South American wood stirrups. The Guacho of Argentina, the Morochucos of Peru and the Hauso of Chile all preferred large wooden "shoes" for use as stirrups rather than the more prevalent iron stirrup. Chawan, tea bowl to be used in the tea ceremony, of distorted oval shape (kutsu or clog, or shoe-shape). Thick cream-colored stoneware that turned red during firing in the unglazed area, covered with a translucent greenish ash glaze that collected in the bottom and around the rim and is very thin around the sides. The sides are ‘rough’, giving a look into the clay.
