Large Chinese Ming Dynasty Stoneware Jar with Spout
This unusual jar was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Apart from the short spout at the shoulder, it is a conventionally-shaped storage jar. The outer surface and inner mouth are coated in a black glaze. The glaze falls just short of the bottom of the jar leaving the concave base unglazed. Likewise, the inner surface also remains unglazed.

A massive bronze (copper tin alloy) vase cast in Han dynasty Hu shape and with Han style Taotie mask handles. The archaistic style decoration is an amalgam of Shang and Zhou dynasty motifs. These consist of upper and lower bands depicting stylized dragons and a central band of large Taotie ("monster"} masks. All are reserved against a flattened Leiwen (cloud) daiper ground. Below the upper two horizontal bands are pendent 'Cicida Blades'.

This tall and impressive pottery set comprising stand, jar and cover was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). They are made from a relatively high-fired grey pottery and have been decorated with "cold painting" designs featuring flower blossoms and geometric patterns in red and white pigments. Old Japanese decorative roof tile, Onigawara, depicting the legend of Jo and Uba, spirits hunting in the pine trees of Takasago. They symbolize the harmonious marriage and long life together. This tile was probably on the roof of the traditional wedding place once. Dimensions are approx. 11 1/2" high x 18 1/2" width and 5" depth, 14 pounds.
A fine Chinese scholar's agate brusher washer with many of the stems and leaves worked away from the vessel in an open worked manner. The stone is a translucent light grey to almost clear color with the stems and leaves having light russet colors terminating in the leaves to an orange hue. Early 20th Century rose quartz carving of 2 beauties. Made of one piece, it is difficult to find a double figure carving like this. Presented on a custom rosewood stand, this rose quartz carving has really nice details that we were not able to fully capture with a camera. It is much nicer in person and you won't be disappointed. In excellent condition, it measures on stand 10-1/2" high x 5" wide x 2". Carving alone measures 9-1/8" high.
A gilt bronze Libation Cup decorated on the outside with auspicious symbols: Cranes, Bamboo,Prunus blossom and Lingzhi fungus and with some of the Buddhist Bajixiang ("eight precious emblems").
This item was made in China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and is from the collection of a British Architect who was born in China and lived in Shanghai until 1931 when he migrated to the UK.
