A rare comical stoneware lidded jar in the shape of a blowfish by Mark V. Marshall for Doulton Lambeth, circa 1885. This globular vessel stands on three fin feet and the lid has a fin shaped handle. The entire piece is glazed in rich green, white and brown tones. The underside bears an impressed "Doulton Lambeth" mark, signature, and other incised factory marks. In excellent condition, it measures 6.5 inches high and 5.25" diameter.

A very elegant tsubo (jar) by one of the most famous Japanese potters, Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919-2007). It is a beautiful example of the work of that master potter.
Shimaoka Tatuzo, who worked and lived in the town of Mashiko, studied with legendary potter Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) and was recognized as a National Living Treasure in 1996 for his Jomon Zogan technique.

Yabu Meizan (1852 - 1934)
Yabu Meizan was born in Osaka, Japan in 1852. He learned to paint Satsuma in 1880 and opened a factory the same year. In the years that followed, he won many awards and held many positions of importance in his field. However, after World War I (1914), demand for Satsuma declined, causing Meizan to concentrate on the domestic market prior to his death in 1934.

An attractively decorated dish styled after late Ming wucai enamelled wares, noted for their bold and vivid colouring. A meandering vine with various flowers surround a central kotobuki or good luck character. The back is decorated with various lingzhi motifs and within the foot-rim is a apocryphal Chinese Ming reign mark for Jiajing.
