A remarkable set of two paintings from the Japanese Muromachi period (1336-1573) mounted on a screen.

Each represents a demon, painted in vivid colors and sublime details.

Kindly inquire if you have some questions.

The support for the painting (screen itself) probably dates from the beginning of the 20th century. It presents tears in the back, but the paintings are not affected. They show traces of wear but are otherwise in good condition. Kindly refer to pictures for detail...

This is a beautiful Japanese cloisonne vase. Though not signed, the workmanship and colors clearly say Hayashi Kodenji. This same opinion is held by North America's leading cloisonne collector. The vase stands 7 1/4 inches tall. It appears perfect but there is a virtually invisible repair to the midnight blue enamel edge shown in the last image.

This is a very special example of Japanese Cloisonne. The workmanship and elegant form are what makes this piece so special. This vase was acquired from one of the world's greatest cloisonne collections. It measures 12 inches tall. Great overall condition but it does has a very tiny enamel flake (See last image) on the back shoulder and minor pitting. It is not signed.

The Byōbu "wind wall" are Japanese screens made up of 4 to 6 panels (the latter being the most common). They serve as partitions or decor for dances in the ceremonial context. They are usually adorned with seasonal flora and fauna, painted in gouache on a gold leaf background. The large gold "solids" highlight the quiet strength of decorative elements such as cypresses (Paine 1981) which seem to emerge from the mist invoking a symbolism. The convention of these "floating clouds" is even older ...

This is a very fine unsigned Japanese cloisonne vase with a unique form. The enamel and wire work are exquisite. It is not signed but the quality is so good and so unique that the maker is Hayashi. Look at the last image of a signed 3 3/4 inch vase and compare them. The work on this vase is not only similar, the gold wire birds, unique spider mums and leaves on this vase are even smaller in size. There is also another sold Hayashi vase (#1352365) on my sight with similar spider mums and also wi...

Japanese late Meiji period cloisonné enamel ovoid form vase attributed to Hayashi Kodenji (1831-1915) or his workshop decorated around the circumference with pheasants among a dense variety of chrysanthemums, daisies, and other flowering plants in a landscape with rockery and flowing water all set against a dark cobalt blue ground. A foliate patterned band is above the foot and a narrow geometric band is below the mouth rim. Silver rims are at the mouth and foot. A tiny unreadable “junjin...

My pictures do not do justice to the elaborate, three-dimensional silver work under the translucent, dark, cherry red enamel. There are moths hidden among the flowers and leaves, and there is a depth to the design that you must admire in person to appreciate. As the sunlight skips over the delicate, gleaming petals of the most pronounced flowers, the rest of the intricately wrought design falls in varying degrees into the shadows.
