A wonderful European School painting, possibly Italian, of the prophet St. Francis of Paolo, late 17th or early 18th century depicting the cannonized hermit inspired and looking back over his shoulder. A possible artist signature or title in pencil on back. 32" x 40" in a early gilt frame. Condition: commensurate with age having some scattered paint loss throughout to surface, a pinhole and a 3/8 inch tear to lower half. Otherwise untouched original condition with no conservation undertaken...
