Condition: commensurate with age having some scattered paint loss throughout to surface, a pinhole and a 3/8 inch tear to lower half. 1930s painted wood netsuke of an actor in a role of Jo standing leaning on a broom. Jo (and his companion Uba) are an elderly couple living as spirits in pine trees in Takasago. Nicely carved in ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of the Hida school of netsuke carvers, painted in saishiki technique - the wood is covered with gesso, which in turn is painted in bright colors. Pleasant patina, some losses to paint as to be expected. Height 2 3/8 inches.
