This is a very fine and rare 18th or 19th century white jade sutra plaque. It was made from a very fine piece of mutton fat white jade of an even and very pale milky white tone. It was skilfully carved in intaglio and gilt with the Chinese version of Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, the Heart Sutra on both sides translated by the famous Tang dynasty monk, Xuanzang. A Chinese jade vase, carved as a lotus leaf with a flower in one corner and a ribbon tying the leaf and its coiled trailing stalk forming the base. The composition is very attractive, the body is quite thinly carved and the stone is of celadon hue. A high quality example of Qing lapidary arts, it measures 14 cm ( 5 1/2 inches) high.
