Rare Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Painted Pottery Dragon

This very rare and unusual pottery model of a seated dragon was made during the 13th - 14th centuries, during either the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or the following Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368), and comes from Yunnan province. It is made from a grey pottery and is finely-detailed. It has been cold-painted with base coat of a creamy-white pigment with faint traces remaining of orange and red pigments on top.

A Japanese Hirado underglaze blue porcelain Mizusashi (water jar) of "barrel" form with a flat, circular cover bearing a spherical knop. The jar is decorated with two kirin galloping across stylized waves. The mouth and the cover bear bands of formalized, archaistic dragons and dots with the recessed foot surrounded by a band of stylized lotus flowers. Dates Late Meiji Period (1880-1900). Kebutsu (lit. transformed Buddha) seated upon clouds, ichiboku-zukuri single-block wooden construction with lacquer/gilt/polychrome finish, displayed on a pierced-work gilt-copper keko (Buddhist ritual-use flower basket). The kebutsu early-Edo ca. 1650, the keko clearly dated to the third year of the Genroku Era (1680), mid-Edo Period. Minor old loss and patination.

Seated Amida Buddha, the hands placed centrally on the lap in the Amida jo-in meditation mudra. Yosegi-zukuri joined-block wooden construction, the eyes of inset crystal, finished in lacquer and gilt. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650. Very good condition overall, with only minor old wood loss and inter-block cracking as well as desirable rubbing and patination to the lacquer-and-gilt finish.
