Used by the bride for wedding this elaborate kingfisher feather crown is a very old and rare piece. The oldest kingfisher ornaments were made by glueing the feathers onto heavy paper. Metal wire was only used to attach pieces together. Both paper and the feathers are fragile, so not many of these old pieces have survived. This one is in average to good condition, some paper loss and some feather loss. It has its original long silk tassels and large glass beads though some of the small beads...
This banneret weather vane, found in upstate New York, is constructed of sheet and wrought iron, and has an incredible presence and visual impact. Featuring a flag with a central cut-out, scrollwork on either side of the flag, and an ornate three dimensional flower blossom at the end, it exemplifies the whimsy that one looks for in great items of folk art.
The vane has a wonderful weathered and rough brown surface, and is in overall excellent condition. It is 37 inches long, 15 inches ta...
This is a very fine and rare 18th or 19th century white jade sutra plaque. It was made from a very fine piece of mutton fat white jade of an even and very pale milky white tone. It was skilfully carved in intaglio and gilt with the Chinese version of Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, the Heart Sutra on both sides translated by the famous Tang dynasty monk, Xuanzang. Jade is such a hard material that it is extremely difficult to carve the Sutra on a plaque of this size. Yet the carvings are excellent...

This type of fukusa is a cover placed over a gift at the time of a gift-giving ceremony such as the "Yui-noh" which is held prior to a wedding. The evergreen pine symbolizes the strength and devotion of men; the plum blossoms represent purity, subtle beauty and the inner strength of women. Bamboo is often used to describe the personality of men and women; for example, a person being as straight (honest) as bamboo could also mean flexible (bendable) to a large extent. When pine (matsu, SHO), bam...
Here is a great little decorated Khmer or Champa pottery pipe. This particular piece is heavily decorated with some minor damage in the form of chips to the rims and body. It measures almost 6cm in length. I currently have three of these that were all recovered by divers from the red river delta, which accounts for their pristine condition.
This is an extremely rare spear point crafted from pottery and dating at least to the Han period of ancient China (circa 200 BC). It could be older than that but I am having difficulty locating references on these items. Stylistically the piece is likely from one of the minority cultures in Southeast Asian and the only other ones I have seen were attributed to the Dong Son. An interesting attribute of these pottery points is that when suspended from a string they make a very melodic tone when st...
