This is a very fine and rare 18th or 19th century white jade sutra plaque. It was made of a very fine piece of mutton fat white jade of an even and very pale milky white tone. It was skilfully carved in intaglio and gilt with the Chinese version of Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, the Heart Sutra on both sides translated by the famous Tang dynasty monk, Xuanzang. Jade is such a hard material that it is extremely difficult to carve the Sutra on a plaque of this size. Yet the carvings are excellent a...

A finely carved Chinese jade recumbent pig in a nearly uniform spinach green color with a particularly expressive face indicating most likely a 20th C. origin. The details in the mouth, tongue, teeth, hooves, and ears are very fine. Mass is 365.6 grams, 3 3/4" l, specific gravity 2.90-2.93, and impervious to steel blades, indicative of nephrite jade. Please forgive the lighting glare which is the white spots on the jade. We would be happy to take additional photos upon request.

Seated in meditation with open and compassionate heart, this bodhisattva is on a spiritual journey, postponing his own salvation in order to remain on earth to help others achieve enlightenment. In contrast to some images of the Japanese Bodhisattva (Bosatsu), often depicted as austere and inward looking, here, Kimura depicts the Bodhisattva as playful, carefree, and decidedly ornate. The inverted image of white contrast dye on black silk also makes for a striking composition.
