Engine-turned ornament in plain frames on sides and cover top. Front side has applied rectangular plate (vacant). Cover top has engraved diagonal band with chevron in lower-right corner, and tooled ornamental border. Box and cover interior cedar lined. Box underside laminate-lined. Fully marked. Art Deco sterling silver box. Made by Henry Matthews in Birmingham in 1927. Square with straight and plain sides. Cover hinged, tabbed, and chamfered. On top parcel gilt with engine-turned ornament with wavy lines between honeycomb; sizes have diaper in trapezoidal frames. Cedar-lined interior; open leather-lined bottom. Fully marked. Very good condition with some gilding loss.

Each: Two crisscrossing arms with twisted fluting each terminating in single faceted socket with wide flat rim; socket set in leaf ring. Arms mounted to side of shaft in form of bud with clusters of seeds applied to faceted leaves; bud set in same mounted to rings and flanges; raised foot.

Designed by Johan Rohde in 1920. Distinctive Danish Modernism synthesizing natural and geometric motifs.
