Oversized Japanese woodblock print by Shufu Miyamoto (b. 1950) titled "Water Weeds at Hiroshima." The lower margin is pencil-titled in kanji and English, pencil-signed, and dated '84. It is numbered in pencil 5/150 at the lower left below the artist's red seal. Paper: 17 5/8" x 22 3/4" (image: 15 1/4" x 21 5/8"). Very good overall condition. There are some minor wrinkles in the paper at the margin edges and there is a small mark in the margin at the upper left corner.

A Japanese lacquer bowed top box with portrait of a Kabuki actor - presumably named in gold lacquer and the role of Daihachi named in a lustrous iron color. All slightly raised work, the portrait is in gray, black, red, flesh tone, browns and gold. Lines including pattern and folds in the figure's attire and hair in his coiffure and sideburns cleanly defined with raised work. Metal along the facing edges of the top and bottom have no doubt contributed nicely to the preservation of the box. Actor...

Rare Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Stupa Jar (AD 618 - 906)

This tall pottery set comprising stand, jar and cover was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). Each part is made from a relatively high-fired grey pottery and "cold painted" in orange and white pigments, the decoration comprising geometric and floral (lotus) patterns. This is an exceedingly rare calligraphy on hand-made paper by famous Kyoto artist Tokuriki Tomikichiro. He was best known for his prints, but was originally trained as a painter. It is delicately brushed on Japanese hand made paper (24.2 cm x 21 cm), a bit smaller than shikishi size, and much thinner. Two edges are deckled. It is inscribed “Close Friend” (知音). A Chinese jade vase, carved as a lotus leaf with a flower in one corner and a ribbon tying the leaf and its coiled trailing stalk forming the base. The composition is very attractive, the body is quite thinly carved and the stone is of celadon hue. A high quality example of Qing lapidary arts, it measures 14 cm ( 5 1/2 inches) high. It comes with its own custom made wooden base. Age; 19 C. condition: excellent.

A very thinly potted small blue and white Ming dynasty saucer. It is so thinly potted that if held against the light, we can see through it. The centre of the saucer has a flower that looks like a lotus pod in a double circle. The porcelain is slightly grayish in colour. It has the Cheng Hua (1465-1487) six character mark and of the period.

There are minor firing faults with frittings and chips along the rim and base. No hair line crack. Generally in good condition.

Decorated with a design of different types of chrysanthemums and pendant lotus petals painted in iron red on either side of basket weave borders and flower cell borders. Silver mounted around 1750. A spectacular and beautiful circa 1730 English silk embroidered apron front, exquisitely embroidered in polychrome silk and metallic threads with garlands and sprays of flowers urns. Scalloped edges are finished with embroidered metallic trim. A somewhat later but very similar example is shown in The Lotus Collection.

There are some scattered unimportant splits and very very minor and small spots of discoloration, all to be expected in such a delicate piece. The textile size is 41 3/8" by 17 ...

A rare Worcester porcelain coffee can, tapering slightly toward the base and molded with corrugated ribs above a finely scalloped foot, the lobed rim with a slight flare, and the double scroll handle with a pointed thumbrest. Painted in the Chinese style with flowering plants, the border with half-flowerheads linked by a red line above leafy tendrils.
