This is a very fine and rare 18th or 19th century white jade sutra plaque. It was made from a very fine piece of mutton fat white jade of an even and very pale milky white tone. It was skilfully carved in intaglio and gilt with the Chinese version of Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, the Heart Sutra on both sides translated by the famous Tang dynasty monk, Xuanzang. Jade is such a hard material that it is extremely difficult to carve the Sutra on a plaque of this size. Yet the carvings are excellent...

This set is well known to collectors. Some insist that they were made by Selro, but I don't think so - at least not this one. It is very unusual to find an entire parure - so I was excited when I saw this one and I have had it for quite a while so that I could enjoy it, but I think it is time to send it on to someone else who will enjoy it. The necklace is a choker 12" long with a 3 1.2" EXTENDER. The figures are approximately 1 1/2" tall which makes it that wide in the front. The bracelet ...

Japanese antique nobori banner, hand painted on cotton, a tiger in bamboo grove. The style of the painting is derived from ancient Korean paintings of tigers. It is a style that became popular in Japan from the 16th century and you will see many screens and scrolls of tigers painted in this manner. The popularity of these paintings in this style continued throughout the Edo period(1608-1868) and into the Meiji era. The quality of the artwork tells us that this nobori is likely to have been done ...

Rare Reference Book: Classical Chinese Furniture – Marcus Flacks

Unlike other Asian cultures of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Chinese did not sit on the floor. The simple fact that the Manchu invaders imported highly flexible furniture from their yurts influenced the development of Chinese design and decorative arts. Within a few years of the Manchu invasion, Chinese craftsmen combined their highly refined design aesthetic with extraordinary exotic woods, veneers, and lacquer to create ...

Rare Chinese Han Dynasty Large Glazed Pottery Ding Tripod - Dragons

This very rare and unusual example of a ding tripod was made during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220) from a fairly high-fired pale reddish-brown pottery. It is extremely "heavily-potted" and unusually tall. It is coated in a streaky green glaze, the colour of which varies due to runs and variations in its thickness. In places the glaze has acquired a silvery iridescence, especially where thin, a result of exposure to mo...

Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Qingbai Glazed Porcelain Bowl

This porcelain bowl was made during the latter part of the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or possible the early Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368), most likely at one of the Dehua kilns in Fujian province. It has a fairly thin translucent body and is coated in a pale greenish and very finely-crackled qingbai glaze. The rim remains unglazed as such bowls were fired in the kiln stacked upside down between firing rings. Often such bowls had a s...
