Good size Japanese bronze plate with hammered and chased design of an alert shishi (Buddhist lion) with bushy tail. Elegant piece with great dynamic design, wonderful detailing (see the individual hairs on its legs), beautiful patina. The piece is in perfect condition, 3 loops on the back for hanging, silk cord. Signed SHUDO in seal form on the front. Unusual and very pleasing object. Diameter 11 7/16 inches.

Cup has acid-etched frieze depicting sailor-suited, flag-holding, all-American boy with exotic coevals in native dress relegated to background. Imagery enhanced with verse: “Little Indian, Sioux or Crow, little frosty Eskimo, little Turk or Japanese—Oh! Don’t you wish that you were me?”
