This is a beautiful and elegant Art Deco period sterling silver box made by the Chicago silversmithing firm of Kalo, circa 1920. The box is of rectangular form, the carved amethyst is in the shape of a flowering gourd and is mounted on the lid within a scrolling silver frame. The lid is hinged and the interior is fitted with a cedar lining. The box is signed on the underside of base: Sterling, hand wrought at the Kalo shop, 117. Total Weight: 15 Troy Ounces. This work was the combined effort of two French sculptors; Pierre Lenoir and Marcel Guillard (1896 - 1932). It is believed two castes of this sculpted urn were made.
