Wakizashi

Wakizashi (脇差) from the Muromachi and Edo periods onward. Wakizashi translates to "side inserted" (more literally) or "side carried". It is the short sword (Sho-to, 小刀) of the pair worn by Samurai. Some other classes were permitted to wear only the short sword. Swords with a cutting edge measuring less than two feet are generally considered to be sho-to.
