Antique, dated 1834, finely hand-painted the Greek Orthodox Icon of Saints Constantine and Helen (Konstantinos and Eleni), with True Cross in the early 19th century.

Tempera on wood panel. The overall quality of the painting is of the highest degree.

The icon depicts Emperor Saint Constantine the Great and his mother, Empress Saint Helen, both in imperial gowns holding the True Cross.

The clothing is finely shaded, and gem-encrusted crowns and oval gem brooches are in keeping with this distinctive feature characteristic for the icons whose origin is found in the monastery workshop.

Finely inscribed titles identify the Emperor and Empress as the Holy Equal to the Apostles.

Empress Helen, in the 4th century, on a pilgrimage to the holy places, is credited with the discovery of the true and life-giving Cross of Jesus Christ.

On the bottom right below the Saint Helen feet is the date 1834, when this icon was painted.

MEASUREMENTS: 38.1 x 29.2 cm (15 x 11.5 inches)

CONDITION: The icon is in its original condition, with no repairs or restorations, and with a nice old patina.

"Holy Equal to the Apostles Constantine & Helen: Saint Helen converted her son, Saint Constantine, to Christianity through her prayer and example. As Emperor, he was responsible for ending the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. He built churches, spread Christianity throughout the Empire, and convoked the First Ecumenical Council, which composed the first part of the Creed. These saints are invoked for help in marriage."
