Antique 17th century Turkish Ottoman War Axe Islamic Osmanli Teber

It consists of a massive crescent-shaped blade, a central hexagonal-shaped block chased with slender vertical grooves, and a projecting-shaped fluke with a square hammer on the back. Mounted on its original handcrafted cylindrical wood haft, which broadened at the top to prevent the steelhead from sliding off.

The famous Janissaries Corps, the elite Ottoman infantry, were armed with these battle axes with large crescent-shaped blades.

The Ottoman axes were crafted in two versions: ornamental gold-inlaid ceremonial axes and plain combat axes.

These Ottoman-style axes were also used in Hungary, Poland, and Russia during the 17th century.

CONDITION: In its original condition, signs of age and usage are visible. The blade's cutting edge and the rear hammer bear nicks, indicating that the axe was used in combat.

The wooden haft has a beautiful, glossy, dark patina.
