Excellent quality antique Himalayan Nepalese large ritual bronze Buddhist oil lamp Sukunda, 18th century, Nepal, Newar tribe Kathmandu Valley.

The lamp consists of an oil storage pitcher with a dragon-shaped handle made of several elements of copper alloy, hand-forged, repoussé, and engraved, soldered, riveted, and hinged together.

The pitcher holds oil for use during rituals. The oil was then ladled out and put on the cast leaf-shaped vessel at the front, where a wick is burned using the oil as fuel.

The leaf-shaped vessel is topped with a cast floral aureole with the forty-armed and eight-headed Avalokiteshvara figure in the center.

The lamp is accompanied by its ladle spoon for the oil, the ladle stem is hand forged of copper alloy, and the finial is cast and hand-chiseled in the form of the peacock.
