Excellent quality antique Himalayan Nepalese large ritual bronze Buddhist oil lamp Sukunda, 18th century, Nepal, Newar tribe Kathmandu Valley.

The lamp consists of an oil storage pitcher with a dragon-shaped handle made of several elements of copper alloy, hand-forged, repoussé, and engraved, soldered, riveted, and hinged together.

The pitcher holds oil for use during rituals. The oil was then ladled out and put on the cast leaf-shaped vessel at the front, where a wick is burned using the oil as fuel.

The leaf-shaped vessel is topped with a cast floral aureole with the forty-armed and eight-headed Avalokiteshvara figure in the center.

The lamp is accompanied by its ladle spoon for the oil, the ladle stem is hand forged of copper alloy, and the finial is cast and hand-chiseled in the form of the peacock.

On April 25, 2008, a similar Sukunda lamp was published in the Aguttes auction house catalog, “ARTS D’ASIE, ARTS PRIMITIFS” (Drouot-Richelieu - Salle 2) at an estimation price of 7000-9000 euros and was sold for 6500 euros.

Please note that this is not a modern tourist souvenir Sukunda like most of the other Sukunda lamps on the market, but this is an authentic 18th-century Sekunda of museum quality.

The buyer will be provided with a copy of the pages from the mentioned book, together with a certificate of authenticity.

Width (handle to spout): 27 cm (10.4 inches). Height: 24.5 cm (9.7 inches). The overall length of the ladle spoon: 19 cm (7.5 inches). Weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 pound).

The lamp is in excellent condition considering its age of over 200 years. No cracks, no restorations, or repairs, with a nice old patina. Base with remains of gilding.
