Antique late 17th century North India, Islamic Indian Mughal dynasty, carved bone panel of rectangular form from the side of a box, the surface is finely carved with a series of four cusped quatrefoil cartouches filled with the allegorical hunting scene "shikargarh / shikargarh" depicting a Mughal nobleman with a quiver full of arrows on his back hunting with a bow tigers and antelopes, He is dressed in 17th century Mughal clothing a flowing muslin gown “Jama “over “paijama”, trousers with sash tied around his waist and the turban in characteristic 17th century style. The cartouches are flanked by profusely carved floral motifs, within a border of repeated small circles between plain stripes.

Similar in form panel also carved with four cusped quatrefoil cartouches is published in the Christie’s London catalogue Islamic Art and Manuscripts 16 October 2001. Lot 275 Estimate Price: GBP 3,000 - GBP 5,000 (US$4342 - US$7237) 1 GBP = 1.4474 US$ exchange on 16 October 2001.

The border on plaque formed of small circles between plain stripes, is identical to the border of a Mughal casket in The Cleveland Museum of Art.

CONDITION: showing age and usage, with exceptional patina. The bone pegs and two wooden dovetail joints on both sites of the panel by which the bone panels were fastened to the wood interior of the casket are still present, the right upper corner chipped consistent with age to be over 300 years old. The panel is housed in a custom made old beveled wooden frame, from which is can freely slip in and out.

The plaque here is remarkable for the quality of its carving; During the 17th -18th century was grate demand for luxury goods among the significantly rich Indian Mughal elite and exquisitely carved boxes by the court artist were created to meet this demand.

PROVENANCE: Acquired from an old Canadian Collection of Islamic Art, including Muslim arms and armor.
