Antique Turkish Ottoman Gilt Copper Alloy Tombak Islamic Basin

The cover (filter) is also decorated with three bunches of grapes on a vine which also issues scalloped leaves with scrolling tendrils, and three cartouches with cusped concave rim embellished with flowers pierced with draining-holes and rising to a central soap-tray in the form of the flower head.

While basins were originally intended for the washing of hands at the dining table, they were also employed as part of lavish displays of silver on sideboards or buffets in Ottoman aristocratic houses.
