It is composed of a curved pressed cow horn body, fitted with a brass buttplate cut with scalloped edges and engraved at the bottom with floral scrolls. The brass upper mount is also cut with scalloped edges, pierced with hearts, and engraved with a wavy pattern at the top. The tapered brass tubular pouring spout is engraved with rings and affixed with an iron turn-off closure.
This early form of the closure system is often found in 16th-century gunpowder flasks, later replaced by a spring-loaded pivoting mechanism and nozzle cap. Musketeers used this form of powder flask throughout Europe from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
