HENRI VAN DER HECHT BELGIAN SCHOOL 1841-1901 “MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH CATTLE AND DROVER” OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED Henri (or Hendrick in Flemish) van der Hecht was born in Brussels in 1841. The son of the celebrated landscape painter, Guillaume van der Hecht he initially took art lessons from his father before enrolling at the Brussels Academy. Here under the guidance of the celebrated painter Jan Portaels he learned the technical skill required to be a painter in the realist tradition. Enamored with landscape painting he became one of the first to embrace the principals of ‘plein-air’ painting and chose to settle in Tervuren for the opportunities that the countryside gave him. Here, van der Hecht met a number of other artists of a similar mind set, painters who were influenced by the Barbizon school artists of France. A keen painter of the effects of sunlight, this particular skill is evident in all of his paintings. In 1868 he helped co-found the influential Societe Libre des Beaux Arts with Joseph Coosemans and Edouard Huberti amongst others. This group was dedicated in its efforts to provide a free exhibition space to those artists refused exhibitions by the establishment of Belgium. Although they painted in a variety of styles and subjects, many of them adhered to the ideals of color palette favored by the French landscape painter Gustave Courbet. By 1872 he had left the Society probably as a result of his acceptance to show at the Society International des Aquafortistes, an interesting exhibition venue established by Felicien Rops. By the late 1880’s he had become one of the most revered landscape painters of his day and was given a commission by the local government of Brabant to create a series of murals. After a distinguished career, Henri vander Hecht died in Brussels in 1901; his paintings however, can still be seen at the museums of Antwerp, Brussels and Ixelles in Belgium. Lit; E. Benefit P. Original impressionist oil on panel by Paul Hagemans. He was born in Antwerp in 1884, the son of the celebrated landscape painter Maurice Hagemans. He received early artistic instruction from his father but at the age of fifteen enrolled at the Academy of Antwerp. Here he was fortunate enough to be tutored by one of the most important landscape painters of nineteenth century Belgium, Isidore Verheyden as well as receiving classes in figure painting from Herman Richir. Graduating in 1906 he established a studio in Antwerp and commenced painting the portraits, figure pieces, landscapes and still-lifes for which he is now celebrated. His early career was spent painting a number of large murals as well as designing stained-glass windows for both ecclesiastical and secular purposes. Although much in demand during this early part of his career it was not until after WWI that his work was fully appreciated by the public and critics of Belgium. By the early 1920’s he had fully developed his unique style of painting, one that utilized a thick impasto and a ‘Luministe’ color palette. Hagemans was to exhibit his work at all of the major Belgian art institutions as well as private galleries too numerous to list. Measuring 24 x 28 in excellent condition.
