A very rare pair of hand guards or constructed from a course woven fibre each incorporating three rows of shark's teeth secured with a fine hand made string or cord. These 'gloves' were made on the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) probably during the first half of the 20th Century.
Condition: excellent - the fibre is frayed in places but apparently no damages or losses. There is old dried mud or soil on the outer surface of each.
Extended length: 40cm
Finger loops: 4cm long.
Back of hand 'guard': 11cm (4.25 inches) square.

A rare carved hardwood plaque depicting a heavily tattooed Maori figure with top-knot and holding a Mere (traditional short club); the eyes are inset with Paua (abalone) shells.
This item was acquired with the large mask (item #201 in our catalogue) and is signed with the same initials.
Condition: very good - the left toe of the left foot is missing; no other damages and no repairs.
75cm (29.5 inches) high.

A rare carved Sepik River Mask decorated with mud embedded cowrie shells and human hair. This item is 'old' by Papua New Guinea standards having been made pre 1970.
Condition: there are losses to the applied decoration (some having been re-glued) and one of the boar's tusks is missing from the nose.
42cm (16.5inches) long.

A large and heavy carved hardwood mask, inset with Paua shell eyebrows, eyes and teeth, depicting tu-mata-uenga - the Maori god of war.
Condition: very good - no damages, repairs or restoration.

A sepik river, Papua New Guinea mask consisting of the carapace of a tortoise decorated with cowrie shells, boars tusks and bird of paradise feathers. This item was probably made during the 1970s.
Condition - very good - no losses.
