A lovingly carved "pitch pine" Madonna by self taught Sister Josephine - one of Saint Francis Cabrini's first orphans who, according to the accompanying letter, was "close to and loved by Mother Cabrini". Mother Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church and is the Patron Saint of Immigrants. Sister Josephine was born 1n 1877 - the same year that Mother Cabrini took her religious vows - she died, aged 101, in New York. Condition - very good. 19.7 inches (50cm) high.
