A small bronze incense burner with four lion mask cabriole legs and twin Chilong dragon handles gripping a key fret decorated rim. The body is cast with a broad band of scrolling lotus. This item was made in China in the 17th Century during the late Ming or early Qing dynasty. A rare small solid bronze figure of a lion, of asymmetric form and with with unusual chased and punched surface decoration. It is attached with a single rivet to a contemporary base and is movable by about 30 degrees. This item either made in China during the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644) or possibly much earlier. A rare, attractively enamelled, figure of the Bodhisattva and Japanese "Goddess of Mercy", Kannon.. Unusually, she is seated on a large boulder inhabited by a writhing white glazed dragon. This item was made in Japan in the Meiji period, during the 19th or early 20th Century Condition: two very minor losses - a chip to one of the dragon's horns and a small chip to the bottom of the dragon's tail. 24 cm / 9.5 inches high. A very rare bronze Brush Washer or possibly a Bitian ("brush lick") cast in the form of a double gourd with scrolling vine decoration. This was made in China, for the Scholar's table in the Ming dynasty during the 16th or early 17th Century. We acquired this item as part of the collection of a British architect who was born in China and lived in Shanghai until 1931. Condition - excellent - there is visible surface wear, consistent with many years of use, but no damages or losses and no repairs. 10.5cm (2.2 inches) long; 2.5cm (1 inch) high. Weight 250gm (9 oz).

A rare early (female) Buddhist Guardian Lion painted with unevenly distributed crackular overglaze turquoise enamel. This item was probably made in China during the 17th or early 18th Century. Condition: very good - there are many small underglaze firing cracks; there is glaze loss to both eyes and there is 'kiln grit'(of the type commonly associated with late Ming "Kraak" export porcelain) to the base. A rare pair of heavy (solid) underglaze cobalt blue decorated porcelain Shishi Lions (koma inu 狛犬)made in the Hirado kilns, Mikawachi, Japan during the later years of the Edo period. Although previously thought to have been made late in the Meiji period (1868-1911) recent scholarship, by (among others) the late David Hyatt-King, is now indicating that these koma inu were made much earlier, circa 1820-1850. Condition: the openwork brocade ball under the paws of the female (with closed mouth) has been broken off and re-joined with an old (glue-less) lead strap work repair and there are small pieces missing from the back of the ball. A small finely carved amber and translucent white coloured soapstone figure group depicting the Daoist Immortal Liu Hai 劉海 and, unusually, a Pixiu. This item was probably made for the Scholar's table as a tactile handling object in the 17th or early 18th Century, possibly during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662 - 1722). Condition: the tip of the plantain leaf base is broken off but the figure group is fully intact. A heavy 19th Century lotus shaped porcelain deep bowl decorated on the outside with famille rose enamels depicting a dignatory and boys in a garden landscape. The base bears the six character seal mark ( painted in iron red) of the Tongzhi emperor (1862-1874). An unusual Pith / 'Rice' paper picture, delicately painted with a scene from a dramatization of "The Death of Ma Su" who was a famous General under the command of Scholar, Inventor and Political and Military Strategist Zhu Ge Liang (181-234 AD). This story is to be found in the historical novel the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and also in the Peking opera "Loss of Jieting". This picture was painted in China during the 19th Century, probably as one of a series of pictures, and is now mounted in a later frame. Condition: good - there are some splits and losses to the plain pith paper background but no damages to the painted area; there have been no repairs or restoration. Frame: 31.5cm (12.3inches) wide; 20.3cm (8inches) high. 清末通草水彩画“诸葛亮挥泪斩马谡” 一幅通草水彩画,展现了三国故事中“诸葛亮挥泪斩马谡”的一幕。此画作于19世纪,可能是一个系列中的一幅,现装裱在后加的木框中。 品相:良好。通草纸背景部分有开裂和缺损,但水彩部分无损伤。无修补或修复。 画框尺寸:宽31.5厘米,高20.3厘米。
