A large Chinese silk satin picture painted and finely embroidered with silk thread, in traditional taste, depicting two figures (probably Scholars) ascending a footpath to a Pavillion shaded by Pine trees in a mountain landscape. The embroidered calligraphy to the top right takes the form of a poem which can be translated as:
"Spring water flows loudly and clearly . . dusk is coming. Climbing the steps and looking at the scene in conversation and laughter. Thanks to the sparse cover of pine trees we can walk through the moonlight. In the quiet of the Mountain Pavillion flying Cranes can be observed from afar."
This item was probably made in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, Eastern China during either the Republic period (1911-1949) or during the 1950s in the early years of the Peoples Republic.
Condition: very good - there are old creases to the silk satin fabric but no damages, losses, repairs or alterations.
117cm (46 inches) wide; 76.2cm (30 inches) high.
