A very rare bronze Brush Washer or possibly a Bitian ("brush lick") cast in the form of a double gourd with scrolling vine decoration. This was made in China, for the Scholar's table in the Ming dynasty during the 16th or early 17th Century. We acquired this item as part of the collection of a British architect who was born in China and lived in Shanghai until 1931. Condition - excellent - there is visible surface wear, consistent with many years of use, but no damages or losses and no repairs. 10.5cm (2.2 inches) long; 2.5cm (1 inch) high. Weight 250gm (9 oz).
