It is both magnificent and elegant. The painting depicts an ancient scholar, dressed in traditional attires, stands on a rocky platform. Amid a sea of floating white clouds are towering mountains and age-old pines. According to its inscription, the artist paints this gold-green landscape in the style of Huang He Shan Qiao, namely Wang Meng , one of the Four Painting Masters of Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The inscribed poem. according to Zhang, is also borrowed from Wang Meng.Due to their expensive media and technically demanding accomplishments, gold-green landscape paintings by Zhang Daqian on gold-coated paper are extremely rare and invaluable. Such masterpieces are mostly collected by the artist's own collection of Dafengtang (House of a Grand Style), seldom available to art collectors in the world. It is from a New York family collection.
