Beautiful Dogon Walu, or antelope, mask. Wood with several layers of native pigments, height 25". Some chips and insect damage, otherwise fine condition. The Walu dancers are admired by the Dogon for their beauty and the strength of their performance. The face of the Walu mask is usually a rectangular box, which also mirrors specific elements of Dogon architecture. The costume worn with the antelope mask consists of fiber hood, skirts, armbands, and fiber bandoliers crossed over the chest. The dancer holds two short sticks with which he scratches the ground, symbolic of the behavior of antelope during their mating displays. This also symbolizes men hoeing the fields to make them fruitful. Comes mounted on a custom base.
