The Chewa are a Bantu people, and the largest ethnic group in Malawi. Their first kingdom was established somewhere around 1500. They had very early trade contact with the Portuguese. Primarily an agricultural peoples, they are matrilineal and known for their extensive masquerades and numerous secret societies. Mask comes mounted on a custom base.
